Damn, I should have used Netflix!

Ken Palmer / Flint Journal – 01-30-06:

Forgot to return that “Hitch” DVD that’s been gathering dust under your couch for months? Be careful. A cop might be on your doorstep looking for it.

That’s what happened when Deborah Gorney of Burton answered her door just before Christmas to find a Richfield Township police officer. He wanted to speak to her daughter, who had two overdue DVDs from Paradise Video.

Some local residents said they wished the police would spend their time on something a bit more serious, like, say, investigating a burglary.

It appears the movie rental industry had adopted the hip new “arrest your customers” business model.

  1. Michael Reed says:

Let me clarify that this is in the Flint Journal but it is not in Flint, our cops here are busy not catching murderers, thieves and other felons. Yeah Burton is a suburb, but that is like blaming Manhattan for Jersey.

Our Mayor is a convicted felon, we do not sweat DVD returns.

  2. Adam says:

I grew up in Saginaw, just north of Flint, and I would be shocked to see a real criminal apprehended in that region.

  3. Pat says:

I have to ask. Did the rental store contact the renter to mention the movie was over due?

  4. GregAllen says:

As I was doing “grunt graphics” right out of college I was typesetting the user agreement in 6 point type for a video rental place.

Burried in the fine print was permission for the video rental staff to break your door lock and enter you house to get the videos! It was very clearly stipulated and I was horrified to read it.

  5. Pat says:

    Greg

Was that 6 pt type printed on a colored background?
