Rice, shopping for shoes and dining in NYC the day after hurricane struck

Seperated at birth: Imelda Marcos, another shoe queen

New Orleans: United States of Shame – International – SPIEGEL ONLINE – News — This op-ed actually ran in the New York Times and got picked up worldwide. I sense that we’ll be reading a lot of these scathing critiques in the weeks ahead. This will be followed by grisley news reports then a congressional investigation that will go nowhere. In-between there will be a lot of self-congratulatory and official press conferences that will tell the public what a great job everyone did. It will then be forgotten after a few prayer meetings.

Of course the following and most scathing commentary within this column (below) was buried at the end of the article instead of being put at the top where it belongs. Here is what shoud be the lead paragraphs.

Michael Brown, the blithering idiot in charge of FEMA – a job he trained for by running something called the International Arabian Horse Association – admitted he didn’t know until Thursday that there were 15,000 desperate, dehydrated, hungry, angry, dying victims of Katrina in the New Orleans Convention Center.

Was he sacked instantly? No, our tone-deaf president hailed him in Mobile, Ala., yesterday: “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.”

It would be one thing if President Bush and his inner circle – Dick Cheney was vacationing in Wyoming; Condi Rice was shoe shopping at Ferragamo’s on Fifth Avenue and attended “Spamalot” before bloggers chased her back to Washington; and Andy Card was off in Maine – lacked empathy but could get the job done. But it is a chilling lack of empathy combined with a stunning lack of efficiency that could make this administration implode.

Of course that won’t happen. But the 2006 Congressional elections just got more interesting.

  1. R Taylor says:

The Democrats will not jump on this directly. It will look like partisan bashing. It looks like the administration is full self destruction mode and doing fine themselves. A weak President makes things very dangerous abroad and domestically, especially with as many enemies as this one has made. Expect all the usual suspects to begin testing the water for blood in the next few weeks. These idiots were so scared of the bogey man they ran head first into a hurricane.

  2. John L says:

Don’t put that past democrats. They often go on criticizing, not that it wouldn’t be justified in this case, but that seems to be the theme of their party and people get sick of negatives. Republicans in power can just go on like nothing is wrong and people like that better. Unfortunently.

  3. Tytus Suski says:

Condi is not responsible for internal matters. She’s the Secretary of State! It is doubtful that she even has any tools to try to help. Let’s keep ourself practical rather than dramatical.

  4. Sean Hickey says:

Speaking of shopping for shoes during the tragedy, is there anyone left that hasn’t seen the video of two police officers busted while looting shoes at a Wal-Mart? Then the one officer tries to play it off like she’s there to stop looters. People really show their true colors during times like these.

Check it out. Go down to “This Video”. Makes me sick.
Finally Some Good in the World

  5. Lindsay says:

Hey, cool down – its not like anyone got a blow job

  6. Mario says:

    >The Democrats will not jump on this directly. It will look like partisan bashing.

I agree with you 100% although I don’t understand it.

If, say, Clinton were still in charge, does anyone think Republicans would hesitate one second to blame him?

Please explain to this canadian why it is patriotic and healthy for democracy to criticise a Dem President but it is unpatriotic to criticise a GOP one??

  7. Brenda Helverson says:

According to Mrs. Marcos’ s Attorney, Gerry Spence, the Phillippine Islands host a number of shoe manufacturers. As a sign of respect, each manufacturer regularly sent Mrs. Marcos a complimentary pair of each type of shoe that they made. Spence says that the shoe story was pure prosecutorial spin.

  8. Michael Reed says:

Could someone explain the reason why the Secretary of State, a department that doesn’t work domestic issues, shopping for shoes in her off time is an issue?

Man, let’s go after all those congressmen in Alaska who might have been in bed with their wives, ’cause you know they are wrong for daring to live a life. Oh yeah and can we make everyone in the country who watched football and ordered pizza this week, or grilled out on the holiday go directly to hell for daring to enjoy themselves while we have soldiers in a war?
