We just got a call from Devline Rossell, a charter captain based out of Venice, Louisiana. He was shopping in New Orleans to get some supplies before the arrival of Gustav (currently listed as a tropical storm that has left at least 22 dead in the Caribbean) and reported that the item most in demand was not food, clothing or shelter.
“I just left a sporting goods store and you would think that the number-one selling item would be plywood or potable water or gasoline right now,” he said. “Apparently it is AR-15s and .223 ammo. I watched at least 20 people buy AR-15s and cases of .223.”
Can’t say I’m surprised. After the nightmare that was Katrina I think it would be unwise for anyone to assume the state, local or federal government could guarantee his or her personal safety during a natural disaster. Of course, I think it is foolish to assume that under any circumstance.
The AR buying spree demonstrates that people don’t think of it as an “assault weapon” but rather an arm that is ideally suited for self-defense, which it is. I also suspect that for some of the folks this is their first firearm. Goes to show that not only is there no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole but that there is no such thing as a gun-control advocate in one either.

>>By using the disclaimer “by and large”,
>>you admit the phrase actually is not true.
Oh no, sure there are SOME (albeit very few) atheists in foxholes.
By and large, the phrase is true. When people are faced with catastrophic disasters they have no control over, most turn to a power greater than themselves.
And Scottie’s link to a site put together by non-combat reservists and armchair quarterback does nothing to diminish the validity of the statement.

I do not agree. I think your conclusion is skewed based on the makeup of the population. In other words, it is already the case that there are very few atheists in the military. So, in order for us to evaluate the statement objectively, we’d have to look at the number of people that previously claimed themselves to be atheists and then become religious while under fire. I bet the number is tiny. In addition, simply yelling “Oh God” when you are shot is not an indication of a change.
I’ll take a high cap 12 gage shotgun with a load of slugs and 00 buckshot any day over an AK-47 or an AR-15. A 12 gage, loaded this way is more distructive than a machine gun and will shred body armour.
Gun control is Not about guns, its about control
Just dont let the Federal Goons Disarm you like they did during Katrina
Protect You & Yours & God be with you +
Some people are slow learners,it takes an event such as Katrina with its accompanying breakdown of order into chaos(along with police refusing to do what must be done).
It’s possible that more will die from these additional arms in private hands,AT LEAST IT WILL BE THE RIGHT GROUP OF PEOPLE DYING THIS TIME!
Let the National Guard and Blackwater try taking the guns from law abiding citizens this time around – I hope the real Americans in New Orleans make Lexington and Concord look like a tea picnic. Bullies don’t stop unless confronted with armed and intent resistance.
Isaiah 66:4: I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
If you don’t care for guns, Isaiah 66:4 is saying that, if you have faith, God will watch over you, whereas those who are so fearful as to put their trust only in guns instead of God, God will bring their fears upon them.
In the state of Indiana, if you have a hand gun permit, you can walk in and buy without any waiting period.
Shotguns are, without a doubt, the best home defense weapons.
.223 rounds travel at 4000 fps and tumble or fragment on contact with virtually anything. In Vietnam, the soldiers didn’t like them because they wouldn’t penetrate foilage unlike the AK47 round.
The Chinese version of the AK47 is called a Mek 90. It is an excellent knockoff and very accurate.
Hopefully, everyone in the Big Easy will have enough sense to leave this time. But, I doubt it….
I live in Louisiana.
There is a background check for gun purchases, can take anywhere from five minutes to a couple of days depending on what flags up on your profile.
If I were them, I’d wait a couple of days and then there’ll be a “clearance sale” on all sporting goods.
Oh, and I own a number of guns in my household. Despite this fact, my total number of people killed is still at zero.
Guns don’t kill people. Bad muthaf—ers with guns kill people.
And gun control takes the guns out of my household, not guns out of criminals’ hands. Criminals usually don’t start donating their guns to charity just because it’s illegal to own them.
A 12 ga shotgun with 00 buckshot is fine for close in work, but one really should have something like the AK47 when you want to reach out and touch someone.
My AK47 is the Egyptian version called the “Mahdi” and it’s as accurate as any deer rifle.
With the 40 round clip, it’s ready to rock.
I figure i can get off about half of that clip before some government goon squad, like Blackwater, lights me up.
And it will be time well spent.
Mommy and Daddy Government is not gonna be there to take care of you. When bands of roving savages and human trash come through your neighborhood, your weapon will give you great comfort. Practice Practice Practice!
The “racking” of a shotgun is a sound that is universally known and understood.
I think the ammo and ar buying spree is to protect themselves from the cops and the national guard, and possibly FEMA.
In Tennessee most people are well armed. Gun
laws vary in the counties. The county north of
me will issue, for free, a “carry permit”.
They incourage the right of self protection. The police are busy collecting revinue. At the
point you call for help, the crime has already been committed and you are a victim.
We don’t trust the police anymore. When they aren’t looking for drugs as revinue they will fine us for not weareing our seat belts.
In addition to the smart idea of stocking up on legal assault rifiles, they should be thinking about survival supplies.
FEMA was so pathetic in response, the people were left totally unprepared for surviving. I’m sure by now it’s understood, you have to look out for yourself!

That’s the one I bought.
If guns are so bad, why do cops use them?
(I hope site this doesn’t discriminate against non-inflammatory personal opinions like “Bring it on” does.)
Get’em now… Lord Obama declared last night that people don’t need AK-47s — AR-15s — those EVIL Assault Weapons — he said gang members but he means everyone. And his VP wrote the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and said it didn’t go far enough…
Free and safe. That’s what the Second Amendment is about. Death to tyrants.
This is going to get interesting, Society decaying from its interior greed, hypocrisy, and corruption will be torn apart by Nature. Or at least this is what might happen, the Government won’t help. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens when all hell breaks loose.
No way any law enforcement officer will take my gun just cause he wants to. He may be shot in the process. I call it self defense. I always keep ammo in stock. I was born and raised in south LA and I know how to shoot and I don’t miss like they do in New Orleans. IN New Orleans, its the bystanders that have to worry about stray bullets. The government needs to follow the laws just like we do. Just because they have an emergency event, the laws don’t change for them to break them. stay safe
Hey Gund vs God,
You sound as if you are trying to be a super Bible thumper, your not! You only have a small idea of what your talking about.
Take a look at what Jesus said ” sell your coat and buy a sword.” Get your facts right before you open your big fat cowardly mouth.
Maybe these people are thinking about Katrina, when the corrupt moron Ray Nagin, who New Orleans is unlucky enough to have as a mayor, ordered registered firearm owners to be forcibly disarmed by local police and the National Guard – who did nothing when, after the flood hit, vandals and looters in boats set fire to several Garden District homes.
But, you see, the vandals and looters looked like Nagin (who afterward pleaded nationwide for black New Orleans refugee families to return to New Orleans after the storm to make the Big Easy a “chocolate town” again). Most of the people who were forcibly disarmed were law abiding and white.
It’s time we had a REAL conversation about things like this in our country.
A twelve gauge automatic with number two buckshot will discourage a looter at 75 yards and disable him for the duration and a person dont have to be a sharpshooter…Short range they can make a real messy scene and they do kick like a mule…Good a dont git in any trenches with the moccasins…
hurricane is over, keep your powder dry for the next time
The Ruger 10 22 is built like other Ruger firearms which is excellent in terms of quality. This a good rifle. I have put at least 10,000 rounds through my Ruger 10/22 in the approximately one year I have owned it, and not experienced any problems.
there is a 10 day waiting period for handguns and rifles in california.
