Corpse kept upright for 3-day wake in Puerto Rico – International Business Times — This stuff just writes itself.
A Puerto Rican man has been granted his wish to remain standing–even in death. A funeral home used a special embalming treatment to keep the corpse of 24-year-old Angel Pantoja Medina standing upright for his three-day wake.
Dressed in a Yankees baseball cap and sunglasses, Pantoja was mourned by relatives while propped upright in his mother’s living room.
His brother Carlos told the El Nuevo Dia newspaper the victim had long said he wanted to be upright for his own wake: “He wanted to be happy, standing.”

If the dead were buried vertical, you could bet 3 to 4 times as many in a cemetery. This was tried several places with tubular caskets and large rotary diggers for the grave. Call the Neptune Society and save a bundle for your family.

The young man got what he wanted. However, I believe that it is sensless to have wakes as the dead are DEAD. It is less painfull to cremate or bury the body with 24 hours. Costs less too.

I think it was a cool thing. not saying I would want to be standing upright. I can say it is something that I have never seen in my years of going to wakes.
