Let’s hope for lots of medal stand protests like a “free tibet” t-shirt as a national anthem is being played.

Anyone notice how the athletes aren’t protesting the government or looking out for their health but rather insulting the “Chinese people?” See, the U.S. really does have something in common with China – the mass media!

Oh, for the days of ’68 and ’36!

  3. Ah_Yea says:

    Don’t worry, that’s just a protester.

Knowing China somewhat, it’s hard to overestimate the “saving face” thing. It’s become a “catch all and be all” to avoid embarrassment.

But sometimes they need a little embarrassment.

I’m just going to try to enjoy the Olympics. As an American, I can’t get on my high horse and say this or that about China just now, since I support the Chinese through my purchases year in and year out. Did you know: China spent $40 billion for the infrastructure for the Olympics, and the opening ceremonies took 7 years to choreograph, and cost $300,000,000 to produce?

  5. James Hill says:

Hopefully the brewing anti-Chinese sentiment is properly applied to the country and not Chinese people in general. In particular, those who have left the country and are trying to make a living while helping family still in that country.

#3. If you want to learn about Tibet and what they want, listen to Brian Dunning’s podcast from skeptoid.com (#111) about the issue. If he’s correct, there is no “Free Tibet” on the table but rather the goal is for Tibet to be a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.

  8. Angel H. Wong says:

I’m not going to bother watching it since NBC owns the exclusive TV rights so that means they’re only going to show the US athletes WHEN THEY’RE WINNING.

  9. chris says:

The people who make athletic clothes for little or no money get to watch people compete in those clothes for little or no money. It just warms my heart.

Anyone who thinks the olympics is not political is delusional.

  12. JimR says:

#11, B.Dog… thanks for that one. Funny as hell.

  13. Brian says:

Funny that we expect our athletes to make a stand about the atrocities committed in China but we don’t expect them to stand up about the atrocities committed here at home (the illegal war, the assault on the middle class, etc. etc.)

    Hypocrite, much?

The US treats everyone with respect and dignity.

It sure was the most spectacular opening ceremony ever. Extremely well coordinated and performed.

  18. Dexton7 says:

Many of the Chinese commoners are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

The Chinese government is pretty special. But then the Chinese and the US have been trading ‘police state’ tactics ideas in recent years.

“OH call them free speech zones. Great Idea! 白人看不懂”
