Eurofighter Typhoon
On July 20th I had the opportunity to attend the 2008 edition of the Farnborough Airshow in England. This was quite an experience for me since I’m an aviation enthusiast. The Airshow takes place during a whole week, with the last two days of the show open to the public. I have to say that going just one day was not enough to be able to see all the show had to offer, such as several flight demonstrations, including the Airbus 380, Eurofighter Typhoon and many other aircraft that are currently in service plus some other retired aircraft, like the Spitfire fighter and other WWII planes. The flying portion of the airshow concluded with the Red Arrows, the Royal Airforce demonstration team.
This post includes several photos that I took during the event, which have been photo-stitched to give an idea of the size of the aircraft. Click any of the pictures to see the original size. I have to warn you that the photos are quite large and have not been retouched with Photoshop, so all of them include image defects, some more than others.

Great pics! I was very surprised to see an Avro Vulcan. Didn’t know any were still flying. Did a little homework and found that that particular plane is apparently the only one that is.

Apparently there was also a Bellanca Citabria Super Decathlon flown in by some guy named Fossett.
Lucky you, that looks like a great show.
I wouldn’t mind picking up that Vulcan real cheap on eBay. That was the kind of plane in the James Bond movie Thunderball, which could make it worth a lot.
The F-15… older than dirt, but a great airshow mainstay. It’s loud, big, fast… Probably never get off the circuit.
It remains to be seen if the airlines can afford to fuel an Airbus 380 and find enought paying passengers to fly from point a to point b …

I’ve sort of wondered about the USAF wonder planes. They cost more than pure gold.
The question is what happens if somebody hits them with a lot more much cheaper planes with good enough electronics? Something that isn’t fooled by stealth for one reason or another.
The USAF can only carry so much ordinance. If the other guy’s electronics is good enough the high tech frames aren’t going to get the job done.
No more USAF.

My earliest memory as a child, in a pram gazing skyward, maybe 1 year old, was seeing a Vulcan bomber do a very low pass overhead with it’s bomb bay open. It looked like a UFO. They were doing live nuke weapons testing in the desert of South Australia, when one decided to buzz the suburb where I lived in Adelaide. The ground shook, the air was filled with the smell of burning jet fuel. Very nice to see one is still flying.
