The Daily Telegraph

POLICE broke into a flat to check who lived there 42 years after its owner was reported missing – and found the mummified remains of the woman sitting in front of her TV. Croatian police say Hedviga Golik, who was born in 1924, had apparently made herself a cuppa and sat down to watch her black-and-white television before she died. Officers believe that would have been in 1966, when she was last seen by neighbours. They said one day she seemed to have just disappeared and they thought she had moved to the capital Zagreb.

But they found her remains in the tiny 13sq m flat after breaking in with bailiffs. A police spokesman said: “So far we have no idea how it is possible that someone officially reported missing so long ago was not found before in the same apartment she used to live in.”

She was probably watching Lost.

  1. RonD says:

Something fishy here. Doesn’t the head dip forward (or to the side or rear) when you die? Her head is still erect. And surely the tv wasn’t still on after 42 years. But in the picture it appears to be on.

  2. JFStan says:

RonD, you can’t honestly believe that picture is real…

  3. adammerkley says:

RD, That photo isn’t of the woman’s remains, it’s just a stock photo for the story.

  4. Who says:

You’d think the guys stopping by to have sex with her would have said something before now.

  5. sirfelix says:

Its hard to believe that not one person wanted something from this women, a bill collector maybe?

If I can live for this long without some jerk busting in to rob me or bother me, then I’ll be moving to Croatia soon.
    Is her apartment available?

  6. Mister Mustard says:

I’d like to find an apartment like that, where nobody asks for the rent for 42 years.

  7. Carnell says:

I didn’t know Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s mom was in Croatia.

    Former USSR.

  9. Mister Mustard says:

    >>Former USSR

I’m not so sure about that. Moscow is the most expensive city in the world to live in:

And there’s nfw I’m living in Siberia or some other E. Bumfuck place…

  10. Keith says:

The TV in the picture is a newer model. Duh!

  11. RonD says:

    #2 JFStan,
Guess I fell for it hook, line, and sinker 🙂

    #3 adammerkley,
    Thanks for the info

  12. The Pirate says:

The question is was the TV still on?

  13. Uncle Patso says:

    Hmm, 13 square meters, that’s about 140 square feet. A 10 x 14 apartment? I’ll say that’s tiny!

Must be state-owned — who else could afford not to collect rent for 42 years.

An odd coincidence: going by the dates, she was 42 when she died, and wasn’t found for 42 years…

  14. Dude says:

This story is obviously not true. I saw the story yesterday, and in that one (AP) was reporting her as only being dead for 25 years. So, in course of the last 24 hours she aged 17 years in death. Something definitely is not right with this story.

Last week the kid who used the Dad’s Visa card for Hookers and Video Games… well, that turned out to not be true. Kid never existed. This is going to end the same way… never happened! I’ll put real money on it.

  15. Said says:

The sex was the same, the dishes were piling up though.

  16. jake3805 says:

Forget the money for rent. How bad must that apt. bldg.
smell that no one noticed the smell of a dead body.

  17. LtJackboot says:

If my rent was one day late or if my utility payments were even one day late I’d get cut off or evicted. Somebody was asleep at the switch.

  18. JimR says:

To find out what really happened, you can communicate with her spirit on channel 3.

  19. #6, 9, 13, 17:
Croatia is former part of Yugoslavia. Though communist, Yugoslavia broke off USSR/Warsaw pact in late 1940’s. Source of great national pride (we remained friendly but free).
In former Yugoslavia state assigned apartments to most typical citizens. One who have had money could buy abode, but more likely than not state gave you one. Free. As in free health care (we have had that too) and all levels of education.
Well, that all ended in bloodshed after the real world economy got us back.
Now we go to #17: Utility bills were regularly ignored in some parts of the country (yes, free electricity too – if you are ready to pay via bloody mayhem later).

Only hole in the story is that most communities were much tighter bound than in the USA. Everyone knew everyone’s business (and what they have eaten for lunch). Very hard to disappear without alerting many.
