POLICE broke into a flat to check who lived there 42 years after its owner was reported missing – and found the mummified remains of the woman sitting in front of her TV. Croatian police say Hedviga Golik, who was born in 1924, had apparently made herself a cuppa and sat down to watch her black-and-white television before she died. Officers believe that would have been in 1966, when she was last seen by neighbours. They said one day she seemed to have just disappeared and they thought she had moved to the capital Zagreb.
But they found her remains in the tiny 13sq m flat after breaking in with bailiffs. A police spokesman said: “So far we have no idea how it is possible that someone officially reported missing so long ago was not found before in the same apartment she used to live in.”
She was probably watching Lost.
Something fishy here. Doesn’t the head dip forward (or to the side or rear) when you die? Her head is still erect. And surely the tv wasn’t still on after 42 years. But in the picture it appears to be on.

Must be state-owned — who else could afford not to collect rent for 42 years.
An odd coincidence: going by the dates, she was 42 when she died, and wasn’t found for 42 years…
This story is obviously not true. I saw the story yesterday, and in that one (AP) was reporting her as only being dead for 25 years. So, in course of the last 24 hours she aged 17 years in death. Something definitely is not right with this story.
Last week the kid who used the Dad’s Visa card for Hookers and Video Games… well, that turned out to not be true. Kid never existed. This is going to end the same way… never happened! I’ll put real money on it.

Croatia is former part of Yugoslavia. Though communist, Yugoslavia broke off USSR/Warsaw pact in late 1940’s. Source of great national pride (we remained friendly but free).
In former Yugoslavia state assigned apartments to most typical citizens. One who have had money could buy abode, but more likely than not state gave you one. Free. As in free health care (we have had that too) and all levels of education.
Well, that all ended in bloodshed after the real world economy got us back.
Now we go to #17: Utility bills were regularly ignored in some parts of the country (yes, free electricity too – if you are ready to pay via bloody mayhem later).
Only hole in the story is that most communities were much tighter bound than in the USA. Everyone knew everyone’s business (and what they have eaten for lunch). Very hard to disappear without alerting many.
