“Terrified cats crammed tightly into cages are hauled off to a meat market in Guangzhou”

What? Meat market? They’re going to eat “diseased” cats?

Daily Mail

Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around.

Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city.

The cull comes in the wake of a government campaign warning of the diseases cats carry and ordering residents to help clear the streets of them.

Cat owners, terrified by the disease warning, are dumping their pets in the streets to be picked up by special collection teams.
[…]
But the crackdown on cats is seen by animal campaigners as just one of a number of extreme measures being taken by communist leaders to ensure that its capital appears clean, green and welcoming during the Olympics.

So who’s gonna keep the mouse and rat population under control now?

Thanks ECA.

Yes, I know how government types are. Let visitors see all the good stuff and sweep all the uglyness under the rug. Quit with the useless political-correctness buddy cause I’m Chinese and I think what they are doing is SICK and barbaric.

  2. Nutto says:

Why do you westerners always feel the need to justify this kind of garbage from the Chinese people?

And don’t forget . These are the people you turn to when you want a $20 vcr, $50 desk, etc. etc. Do the world a favor, steer clear of Chinese made products. *&@!$*! Sub-humans.

P.S. if you REALLY want to notice how fucked up it is, look at the cage on the left with the white cat and the brown ears. Look at that face, and tell me it doesn’t know it’s in trouble

At least US is doing better now than in 1990’s when up to 17 million cats and dogs were euthanized annually in animal shelters. These days China is using around 4 million cats for food, while US kills about 8 million dogs and cats per year.

The Chinese homeless cats that I’ve seen are unbelievably dirty (well the country is too). I’m not sure if the cats get any share of the rat and mouse population, some poor people seem to make reasonable living by catching and selling them for restaurants and road side food stalls.

Caution, very graphic video. It’s not only about cats, but animal cruelty in general, much of it in the Far East. I watched this video once but can’t watch it again.

China deserves all the bad things that can come it’s way. It’s unforgivable that we already forgot about Tienanmen Square and gave them such a great honor as hosting the Olympiads, the greatest show of Humanity, Valour and Honor.

By all accounts, this is a barbarian people.

Isn’t this the Year of the Rat?

China is just trying to celebrate!

I think if you took a general poll, 99% of people would respond that they would much rather see this type of cruel treatment done to Lawyers than cats.

    The number 1 response:
    So what? They’re Lawyers.

Let’s look at this for a minute.

The chinese eats anything on four legs.
We in America like cats and dogs. We think they’re [the Chinese are] disgusting, and we wouldn’t take it for anything in the world.

    We eat cows.
In the middle east, they’re held sacred. One of the few reasons why many Islam extremist want us [Americans] all dead.

We’re being hypocrites people. Plain and simple.

If it’s on four legs, it’s food. Deal with it. The only thing I want more than to eat is to make sure we don’t over-harvest as to make these populations extinct, and leave ourselves without any sort of meat.

  14. Max Exter says:

#48: Uh, you might want to read up on which religion doesn’t eat cows.

In the US, we don’t eat *pets.* Cats and dogs are considered pets. Cows generally are not, though I have no doubt that there are a few families out there who actually do have one for a pet. Strong chances they won’t eat it.

I think cows are considered gods in some eastern countries. I haven’t been to China and actually don’t want to. At the end of the day the lack of animal husbandry along with plain old contempt and disrespect towards animals (and people) in China is plain to see in anybody’s language. China has a lot of people but still we can’t excuse deliberate cruelty, sadism, evil. By the way I just brought an $80 desk from the store, isn’t that a great deal?
Virtually every thing is made in China, including those cute little realistic fluffy cat figurines 🙂 Its difficult to avoid when buying China-made when the price is so right, for us in the developed nations anyway. I live in New Zealand where my government just made a historic trade deal with China, so mixed messages are afoot. I’ve looked at two sides to the story, at the end of the day the matter is really quite simple. Evil must not be defended.
