A new industry-backed Copyright Alliance was launched yesterday in Washington, DC, with the goal of “promoting the value of copyright as an agent for creativity, jobs, and growth.” But the group wants to do more than simply get the word out about the value of copyright—it wants to actively strengthen current copyright law.
The argument that stronger copyright protection will benefit consumers by encouraging more creativity is already present in the group’s initial materials and is reminiscent of the argument that DRM enables consumer choice by making available material that could not otherwise be accessed—exactly the argument that Ross was in fact making back in 2005.
We.are.fucked.
Again.
I guess the iTunes store will be it for me.
No problemo!
“stronger copyright protection will benefit consumers by encouraging more creativity”
That statement would be hilariously funny if it wasn’t so sad. Trying to be creative without unintentionally violating a copyright here and there is very difficult.
Of course they want stronger laws. Strong copyright laws tend to favor giant companies, ironically, like NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox.
Giant companies are the only ones who can pay giant licensing fees for the content that never expires and has no fair use rights.
#4, V, did you forget gasp Disney? Mickey will *never* be in the public domain if Disney keeps paying off Congress to extend the copyright laws. No conspiracy theory here, look it up.
I wanna go into the Disney vault !!
This implies we have unbiased reporting now.
That’s a crock.
But,
MOSt of the BIG guys sell off the GOOD shows…to other networks…
So where is the copyright, when CBS sells off SC1, to SCI-FI..

No-one says that you have to watch these channels. Vote with your time/wallet.
When the truth doesn’t suit you, buy the presses!
#9 – I think that’s already happening, especially with the network “news” shows. Of course, Faux News keeps spouting the radical right propaganda and calling it balanced. But aren’t the big networks falling off in viewership? That’s probably a contributing factor to their wanting to put the brakes on internet creativity. Ten to one this new lobbying group gets Diane Feinstein (D-Calif) to sponsor some new entertainment mafia bill. She is such a willing tool of those “all your thoughts are belong to us” bassids.
Aah. Meant to address #10 to #8, Jägermeister. Sorry.
Li’s comment (#9) is a pretty accurate description of what’s been happening to the media, come to think of it.

I want to wear a mickey mouse condom.
Curiously, what is the picture supposed to represent in relation to this story?
Also, why can’t all the unrelated to the story babes be as interesting and attractive as this one. I am tired of fantasy 16 year olds in school uniforms that serve only to underscore the rampant mysogeny and desperation of this site’s male dominated demographic…
But Chocolate Screwdriver Girl with Big Eyes is really cute.
So far I haven’t seen much reporting on IP issues by any of those mentioned in the headline and what I have seen is just talking heads, reading press releases from the RIAA and the MPAA without comment.
I suppose the difference is that now this group will openly fill the pockets of politicians to purchase their support and add to the nonsensical press releases, to be parroted with all seriousness by their own employees.
To sum up, I agree with #1 but instead of adding ‘again’, I’d say we’re still screwed, blued and tattooed.
#10 – …a contributing factor to their wanting to put the brakes on internet creativity.
The gates are open, and I don’t think they have the power to close them.
Mickey MouseTM forever!
#13 she’s cute, duh, and also i think she’s the media screwing us. very creative
