Samsung R55 Hybrid HDD Laptop Launched – PCJoint.com: Samsung has announced its first laptop with new Hybrid HDD built in. The first to get this Hybrid HDD upgrade is 15.4″ Samsung R55 multimedia notebook.
Hybrid HDD is a technology that ads a flash RAM chip to the standard HDD. This way most frequently used data can be stored and read from flash memory, reducing the usage (spin) of HDD itself.
According to Samsung, when used for small chunks (up to 10Mb) of data in R55, Hybrid Hard Drive had 26% improvement on data reading and 71% improvement of datawriting speed, 32% lower power consumption and increased HDD longevity by 10%.

Great news but what’s with the manufacturers these days? If I am releasing this, first on the list would be an ultaportable laptop, than the top of the line performance laptop and maybe after all these mid-line multimedia laptop…
It’s just an incremental improvement, especially since there are now Solid State Drives available at an affordable price. The 2.5″ model, which hold 32 Gigs, is $350. That’s a lot for 32 Gigs, but it depends on how you define value.
Now, if you’re looking for a drive to bring your entire music and movie collection gathered over the past 10 years (and we all know that’s a LOT), then perhaps one of these drives makes move sense.
Perhaps if the notebook gets the SSD, and you get an external USB HDD for huge storage space, then it would marry the best of both worlds.
Anyone figured out how to move the Windows XP swap / paging file for a hard drive onto a USB flash stick? That could help.
Once again, this technology is a non-factor. All flash memory HDDs are already out… and will reach a decent price point in the next 18 months.

John will be happy but not as happy as he will be when Dell starts selling these drives in their $399 systems. Actually I’d be pretty happy about that too!
