San Francisco, 2010

  1. Awake says:

I don’t get it… why is this picture special in ANY way? It’s crooked, the signs intrude on the right. At least if the modernity of the pyramid building on the left were juxtaposed against the victorian theme of the hotel, then maybe it would be a little more interesting. Why is a bad snapshot the “Picture of the week”?

[where does it say picture of the week?? –ed]

  2. jbenson2 says:

Have to agree with Awake. 2nd photo also tilted.

Don’t understand what the point of the photo is.

    How about an explanation?

  3. Mr Anderson says:

Something out of a Hitchcock movie?

    There’s Norman’s Mom sitting up in a window…

  4. overtemp says:

    Begging to be cropped.

  5. LDA says:

    Cool building.

  6. spsffan says:

Well, the cool looking green building isn’t the North Beach Hotel..that’s the one on the right.

One of the cool things about San Francisco is that so much of it was built right after the 1906 earthquake and fire. So you have tons of Victorian (well, technically Edwardian since Queen Victoria died in 1901 or 2) buildings. In other, older cities, many of the old buildings were razed because they were not functional anymore, but SF’s were modern enough, having been built with electricity and indoor plumbing, to keep.

  7. hhopper says:

I wonder if that exterior is copper.

  8. bill says:

Besides being right near some of the best bars on the planet..

  9. MikeN says:

If seven miles is walking distance, then just about every place in every town is walking distance.

  10. Hothr says:

Is it because North Beach Hotel is not on a beach?

  11. Bob says:

John – Please make the large version available. Thanks.

  12. bill says:

    7 miles?

The problem is the HILLS!!! Take a cable car and then a trolly!!!

but I guess that is part of the fun…

  13. shooff says:

San Francisco geology makes these buildings even more impressive.

Just spent a weekend at the Hotel Vitale on the Embarcadaro. I was impressed by the farmer’s market at the Ferry Building. I had not visited the Ferry Building since the remodel. A true gem now,…blows away the Wharf.

  14. cwitzel says:

I think it might be that it is a little phallic.
Not quite as phallic as this one: http://www.austinmotel.com/
    but still a bit phallic!

  15. admfubar says:

    WOW!! LOOK AT THE BRICKS!!!

  16. Steve says:

See that sliver of blue sky. The past few days it’s been cause for celebration around here. Can’t wait for summer to end so we can have some summer weather here.

  17. Still Right says:

If my memory serves me, that green building is the Trident, and was owned by the Kingston Trio in the 60’s.
Am I the only one who knows this?

  18. Still Right says:

    I believe it is copper

  19. lividd says:

    North beach hotel..”enjoy your bedbugs”

  20. sargasso_c says:

    Begging for a HDR photo.

  21. Uncle Patso says:

I love San Francisco! The Exploratorium is one of the best science museums in the world!
