Two Martinsville police officers have been suspended after they were accused of using a Taser to subdue a 10-year-old.
A news release from the mayor’s office and the Martinsville Police Department said the officers responded Tuesday evening to Tender Teddies Day Care on reports of a 10-year-old who was out of control.
The release said that the officers, trying to prevent the child from hurting other children, staff members and himself, slapped the boy and then used a Taser to subdue him.
“One of the police officers came out here and said they have trouble with him all the time because he is a problem child,” said neighbor Stephanie Hamilton. “He was kicking and screaming … and he wouldn’t quit.”
Oooooh, tough 10-year old. Next time shoot him.

I have no problems with police tasering a troublesome child.
They have badges and guns and kids know who they are … do what they say.
I mean if police have to be called over a 10 year old, it means there are some real problems with the child’s behavior to begin with.
Guy I know taught fourth grade, had to give it up after his second nervous breakdown.
Guess no one here will admit to growing up in the 40’s or 50’s.
Back then, you worried much more about what your parents would do to you then some policeman. Tasers? What’s that?
Heck, the neighbors had too much power. Ever get dragged around by your ear?

Again I have to ask how hard is it REALLY to take down a 10 year old without resorting to the police.
And what training did the police get get they slap him and tase him?
If an adult can get a slap in, then an adult can get a hold and take down.
I remember being a 10 year old. And I don’t care HOW big the kid is, an adult is bigger, stronger and faster. Cmon. It is called the staff doesn’t want to get their hands soiled and possibly sued.
Again it is a situation where staff is incompetent and the cop just wanted to use their tasers.

I’m totally with #5 HMeyer. Remember, this child was so out of control, the daycare called the police. A 10-year-old kid can seriously harm other children. The police have to be careful wrestling with a 10 year old, because they might sprain his wrist or pull his shoulder out of joint. Tasing seems like a fast, safe way to get a child under control.
These parents who don’t know how to control their children have to figure something out before serious problems occur. We decided years ago that spanking is cruel and to try different, effective methods. Apparently those alternative methods are too sophisticated for some parents. Now what? Wait until the kids are old enough for jail? Or until an out-of-control child runs in front of a car or provokes a wild animal or electrocutes himself? Children must have discipline for their own safety.
Better safe than sorry. He also looked at least 13.

Or the day care has rules that stop a teacher restraining or even touching or a child.
So if the child hits another child your only legal option is to call the police – they can’t hit the child so there only option is to shoot or tazer the child.
Remember this is all for the children.

You guys seem to live in a dreamworld. Go check out some of the poorer neighborhood schools and this kid is nothing compare to many of those.
My oldest sister have taught in the local schools here for over 20 years and she always complained about the Spanish kids being the worst. However, she then commends most of the parents for disciplining their kids once they were informed, unlike…um, white people 🙂 There is very little help from white parents when their kid is behaving very badly. Most just change schools in the hopes that something will change lmao.
Sorry, don’t want this to become racist. Just saying white kids and parents really don’t change base on what I’ve seen and heard from my sister.
Oh, and this kid is not even 1/10th as bad as I was at the age! And back then you can be punish. I was punish but it always just seem to make me laugh more 🙂 This kid is just a tad bad.
Now let me guess somebody wants them to use a black jack or night stick on the kid?
Getting tasered hurts like bleep but the only people that die after getting tasered seem to be good candidates for a heart attack or stroke because of how bleeped off they were anyway _and_ their medical conditions.
Yeah I guess they could have just out muscled him but you can get hurt that way and so can the kid.
I got an idea why don’t you guys that think they did the wrong thing take care of the next nut yourselves? Fair enough?
Nice, so the consensus seems to be that torture compliance is fine for a 10 year old. How low can we go? A screaming baby can be a real problem, especially on public transport. It may distract the driver and cause an accident that harms many passengers, so let’s taser out of control babies to protect the public. It is the parents fault anyway for not feeding the baby or changing it’s nappy and it is better than shooting it.
Why head down a slippery slope when you can just jump of the cliff, much more efficient.

I’ve worked with problem children for over 22 years. The place where I work is designed to deal with just those types of children (children with severe behavioral problems). So I can imagine what that situation is like when the police arrive. And working within a controlled environment, that child can be managed and learn how to behave. The police can’t do that. They’re not social workers. It’s not their job. They’re trained to catch the bad guys and keep us all safe. And I would have to guess the choices for them are: Pepper spray, tazer, or subdue and handcuff and throw in jail. So I guess that they just did what they are trained to do. I’m not saying I approve, but I do understand.
Just a thought.

If my kids acted up, I didn’t mind if the neighbors spanked him/her. The worse part, they knew once I found out it would be worse.
Kids should have some fear of their parents, you are not a buddy or big sister! You are a parent, the all-knowing, and final judge in all matters in their lives until they are 18 AND out of the house.

In my part of the country, the police are mostly reactive, not proactive. They are very good at radar speed enforcement, DUI check points, DWB (driving while black) containment and other forms of public intimidation. They concentrate on those means and methods that will have a positive impact on statistical performance. They are not that good at keeping the public safe. When a crime like a burglary or a vehicle theft occurs, they often have a “what do you expect me to do about it” attitude.
Shot the kid and the parents. Give teachers back the right to physical discipline and a lot of this crap will stop anyway. I don’t know any schools in NA (North America, well US and Canada anyway) that allow the teacher to discipline children like this in the only way they understand.
Think about it, did they try dumping water, cold water on the kid? Usually that works due to several reasons, one the shock of the cold on heated skin will grab his attention, two the cold water will slow him down a fraction if you used enough, three its unexpected, four once he starts shivering he will be cooled off enough so he can be “controlled”. In my experience shouting at a kid, slapping him or being antagonistic to him only makes it worse, hence you end with the taser.
Its not good, its illegal!! At least where I live at. Makes me wonder what the teacher did to him, anyone know? If he is so problematic where is social services, were they called when he started showing sings of this pattern of misconduct?
Also, I won’t recommend the taser on someone with “emotional” disorders. They usually are so pumped with adrenaline one of two things may happen, they either shrug it off or they die when their heart just stops.
Confronting someone out of control is the best way to make them madder, its like someone with epilepsy, you remove everyone from the room, you exit the room and then make them pay for whatever they break in the next 5 minutes. I f they hurt themselves in the process so be it, they will stop the tantrum even faster.
Basic special ed psychology, seldom taught or used. Wonder why?
