Slashdot.org – Sept. 15, 2009:

“According to both the BBC and NewScientist, showering may be bad for your health. Apparently, dirty shower heads can be an ideal breeding ground for Mycobacterium avium , a bug responsible for a type of pulmonary disease more prevalent than tuberculosis in developed countries, cases of which have risen in parallel with the rise in showering. Tests revealed nearly a third of devices harbor significant levels the critter.”

  1. Ah_Yea says:

That’s it, I’m never showering again!!

Maybe I’ll just move to France where nobody will notice.

  2. Brian says:

Easy fix, just run pure hot for a minute or so. If you water heater is set right this will kill any bacteria.

  3. sargasso says:

#1. “That’s it, I’m never showering again!! Maybe I’ll just move to France where nobody will notice”. Anywhere but New Zealand, mate.

  4. Luc says:

“According to both the BBC and NewScientist…”

British people saying that showering is bad? Is that news?

  5. battery says:

I have a bridge to sell you too, because if you drive on any other bridge you can get sick. Just buy my bridge and you will be protected.

  6. Rick Cain says:

Just soak your shower head in pure vinegar once every few months, gets rid of the accumulated scale inside too.

  7. Animby says:

    # 4 Luc said, “British people saying that showering is bad?”

Ranks right up there with brushing their teeth.

    # 2 Brian said, “If you water heater is set right this will kill any bacteria.”

You got your water heater set to boil??? Al Gore wants tot alk to you…

  8. Colorado says:

This guy studied 45 shower heads in 9 cities. That sounds like a science fair project! The article says they don’t know if the bacteria is even harmful to humans and don’t know what quantity it would take to be harmful. This Mycobacterium is rarely studied, rarely measured, and the test for it is complicated. What we know for sure is that this Colorado scientist got some free trips around the country. What a crock.

  9. Dr Dodd says:

Makes more sense to test the faucet where you get your drinking water than shower water.

Sounds like the Greenies are testing out a new scare tactic. People are so gullible.
