The iPhone 3G may, at least for some users, have an additional, undocumented feature: It can be used to toast bread.

Reports are coming in that the new, million-selling iPhone is suffering from overheating issues. The handsets are getting so warm, in fact, that the plastic cases of the white models are discoloring to pink.

It’s not just anonymous forum posters, either. Melissa J. Perenson of PC World has a toasty 3GS, too:

And at some point, I became aware the handset had become very hot. Very, very hot — not just on the back, but the entire length of the front face, too. I was using a game, and then later the Web browser for reading the news about Michael Jackson, all over a Wi-Fi connection while plugged in. And in those circumstances, well…toasty doesn’t even describe how surprisingly hot it got. It was too hot to even put the phone against my face.

Other reports across the web, including the Apple discussion forums, seem to point at GPS use and playing games as the culprits. Of course, there are problems with product launches all the time, and Apple users tend to be more vocal than most. And Apple is notoriously reticent to admit anything is wrong, Remember the first gen white MacBooks that turned yellow on top?

So much for Quality Control.

Because Apple is the only company to EVER have issues with their products? Not defending Apple just pointing out, every hardware brand(not going to say manufacturer, because let’s face it, almost nobody makes their own stuff in their own factories these days, it’s all sub contracted to Chinese factories)has had some issue at some point.

Meh, move along, nothing to see here.

    birth control app?

Of course hindsight is 20/20, but what did they think would happen to a device with what is arguably the highest component density in the industry? It has to drive (and illuminate) a color graphics display, it has to operate as an RF node, and it has to process the data in the game/app/function, and manage wireless network protocols. No wonder the damn thing gets hot.

No surprise. Some of the ipods had the same problem (mine included)…

… and Apple’s hardware just sucks, sucks, sucks.

My wife is on her 3rd Macbook, which is physically disintegrating just after a year of purchase, as did her other Macbooks (DVD drive stopped working; incessant buzzing from the power connector; the casing is cracked and broken in 3 different places, etc… and the whole machine now runs as slow as OJ’s getaway car.

The HP I’m using right now, by contrast, is 4 years old and still superior to her newest Macbook in every way.

    1,

Have you ever heard about paying more for Apple because of the “quality”?

Thats why… something about glass houses, climbing trees too high etc…

    But will it blend?

    That’s not a glitch, it’s a feature.

  9. Now for Something Completely Different says:

It’s the new iLight feature. When you’re out camping you can lean your iPhone against a pile of leaves and start a fire. GREAT!

  10. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

The US military asked for this feature to they could be used to warm up MREs.

  11. JimR says:

Jobs told his replacement that he wanted a new, really hot phone.

“Toast. There’s an app for that!”

    “Apple is toast.”

I think Apple user’s need to start realizing that Apple does not make perfect products. In fact many of their product face the same problems that every other China made electronics face. Poor quality control. Apple was only good when it still made its products in the US. Now of course everything is made in the Asian countries. Same as Dell, and the rest. Why we continually think Apple is going to be imune from this is just wrong.

Good RC electronics are usually made in Taiwan.

Interesting, that’s how I test my stove, coffee, bath water…

    13,

Ah. I remember the supreme quality of the Apple ///. If lifting a desktop a few inches of the desk and dropping it is NOT a viable solution, I don’t know what is.

Now that 16 people have “commented”, and not one of those 16 being USERS of the iPhone 3GS (i.e. NO credibility or experience in the discussion), I will throw in my 2 cents. I have a 3GS (white), and have not experienced this phenomenon. And I have used the phone while plugged in and charging. Warmth, yes, but not hot by any stretch of the imagination.

I would expect that if one were playing a game which uses a lot of graphics, or surfing the web over WiFi which uses a lot of battery power, all while the unit is being charged, that it would get warm, or even “hot” to some people. Not to say this phenomenon isn’t happening, just reporting MY experience.

I have had mine for 2 days now and have noticed it gets pretty warm but not hot. Will post back in a few days
