In 1991, the government of Somalia collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since – and the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country’s food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died.

Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: “Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury – you name it.” Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to “dispose” of cheaply. When I asked Mr Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: “Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention.” At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia’s seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by overexploitation – and now we have moved on to theirs. This is the context in which the “pirates” have emerged. Somalian fishermen took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least levy a “tax” on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia – and ordinary Somalis agree. The independent Somalian news site WardheerNews found 70 per cent “strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defence”.

Do we ever get the straight skinny from the media?

  1. Mr. Fusion says:

So when are we going to see some evidence that the Somalian beaches are all waste pits? “Some” European companies (countries?) have “dumped” radioactive materials and toxic wastes there. OK, fine, who, how much, and where? Somalia has a rather large coastline.

There has been plenty of accusations but the only link told us less then McCullough’s referenced story.

The pirates recently plaguing shipping aren’t interested in compensation for their beach dumps. They are solely looking for booty to loot and extortion money be paid. Whether you call them Pirates, War Lords, or Thieves, they are just the same. They care nothing about the people in Somalia.

  2. Mr. Fusion says:

    #1, Alphie, the Quaalude Queen,

I searched for your story you posted. The only hit was yours as exactly you have it. So are you making up more bullshit again? Bearing false witness against people?

C’mon Queenie, you have to quite with the bullshit.

  3. Sea Lawyer says:

#28, “And if the US were to conquer Somalia to prevent this dumping, and provide a government”

It’s not like Somalia is some big region of lawless anarchy. Much of the “governance” there has just become very decentralized. Sort of like how much of Africa was before the Europeans came around and eventually decided to arbitrarily draw borders, dividing it up amongst themselves.

  4. James Hill - Owning Uncle Dave as long as he's posted. says:

More apologist hype from those who have already failed. Just because America won is no reason to get pissy, liberals.

  5. ECA says:

    For those that want proof…
You have to get an independent nation to become CONCERNED and want to show whats happening..

    also know as,
SOMEONE ELSE must give a S#$#$ whats going on, then to just throw STONES at a nation trying to survive..

  6. deowll says:

The poor and the innocent didn’t supply the boats and guns.

The men on the boats are no longer innocents.

Yeah the place needs a government but the only way to give them one is move in and shoot a lot of people.

    You want the job?

Do you want us to do the job?

Have various slim balls been screwing over these people? Sure but is it our job to fix it? We weren’t even on the suspects list.

Fixing other peoples messes is how we ended up in various wars in locations a long way from home.

  7. jk says:

Questions re recent attack on American vessel: why has FBI prevented questioning of US crew? Why hasn’t captain been interviewed? Why all the secrecy???? Why can’t these huge vessels have armed patrol boat escorts? Or why don’t they arm themselves as merchant vessels did in 18th and 19th centuries? Hard to believe the Somali pirates in small boats can capture big ships over and over again.

  8. MikeN says:

    >Why can’t these huge vessels have armed patrol boat escorts?

How many trips do you think are made? How much is each patrol escort?

  9. ECA says:

    deow,
the only places the USA GOV. has stuck their NOSE in, is when there is OIL, or corp backing..
Every time there is something WE CAN DO, NOT involving OIL, we dont do ANYTHING..

  10. johnypaycut says:

I see natural selection at work here. may be some will not listen when warned that they’r poluting waters near
somalai? so just go right ahead and eat that fish..
we’l see if the polution is present?
i’d like to say this as well? if you want a “world economy” you’v got to treat all people fair, not all of somalai are pirates.

  11. Logic Black Hole says:

Let me give you an analogy.

I live in a nice neighborhood. You live in a crappy neighborhood. If I drive my car past your neighborhood, it’s OK to steal my car and everything in my trunk simply because you’re poor? When did being poor become an excuse to start breaking the law with no consequences. Eastern Europe was as poor as it got after WWII. However, they started building and bringing in business to improve their economy and infrastructure. They WORKED to improve their lives instead of feeding off the success of others.
