The Escape From City 17 short film series is an adaptation based on the Half Life computer game saga by Valve Corporation. Originally envisioned as a project to test out numerous post production techniques, as well as a spec commercial, it ballooned into a multi part series. Filmed guerrilla style with no money, no time, no crew, no script, the first two episodes were made from beginning to end on a budget of $500.

This has been flying around the internet for the last week.

The visuals and costumes are nice, but the writing and acting are horrible.

“but the writing and acting are horrible.”

Wasn’t great but wouldn’t go as far as to say it was horrible. Revolutionary Road, now that was horrible, and it cost quite a few more bucks.

The part where the one guy complained about having to walk made me cringe.

Gee, it looks like an Islamic dream come true.

Gee, you sound like an ignorant, brainwashed, shit-for-brains, piece of garbage.

  6. RBG says:

Hollywood needs to use more news and corporate video cameramen who know how to hold a camera steady.

#6, RGB: I believe the shaky camera work is intentional. It’s supposed to create a sense of immediacy, but it’s really overused and has become cliche. And it gives me a headache.

  8. RBG says:

In fact all shaky-cam does for me is remind the viewer that this is not fly-on-the-wall real, but a movie with the cameraman going, “Hey look at me! I’m the cameraman!” If there’s a cameraman nearby, why doesn’t he get off his arse and help?

Yeah, I agree with #4. If we let Islam spread around the world this is what we will get. Death and destruction all over the world That seems to be what they like. Period.

  10. Brad Eleven says:

Acting wasn’t so bad, foley and post-prod FX were great. For $500, incredible.

$500, there is no way this was made for $500. The squibs alone would cost more than that.

Looks like it was all digital animation. The sounds of gun fire and explosions are from the game. If you watch the “guns” the actions are not even moving, no spent brass being ejected. I doubt even blanks were used in the making of this show.

I can’t wait for Postal3 to come out.
The Source engine has come a long way in development.
It makes Me wonder what the next-gen graphics engines will be capable of.

  14. Miguel says:

Quite entertaining, for 500 bucks. Looking forward for the next parts!
