Linux Fedora 10 comes in nanny mode. The developers don’t want you to log in as root because your “not supposed to.” But I say real users are root users so here’s how to take the training wheels off. All you have to do is edit the file /etc/pam.d/gdm and remoce this like.

auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

Linux seems in many ways to be more of a religion than an operating system. It’s great for servers in text mode. I use it myself here on dvorak.org and 400 other sites. But Linux is a culture of the wilfull ignorant and that is in part why that even though it’s free, it still has less that 1% market share. I suspect that if you were to offer people $1000 to never use Windows or Macs again and use Linux only you would find few takers if the offer excludes those who are already using Linux. Fedora is deliberately trying to embrace failure. The above fix is an example as to why.

I still say that using the “vi” editor causes brain damage. And – I’m not one of those reviewers who gush over how wonderful Fedora is no matter how bad it sucks.

  1. Saint Tom of the Church of Emacs says:

    DON’T USE VI!!!!!
vi vi vi is the editor of the beast!! It’s EVIL!!

If your OS doesn’t include a decent editor, you could use nano, or atleast ed, just not vi

Also, you are complaining about a end-user OS having a end-user feature. If you want a server OS try CentOS or Debian!

Ah! Her name is Suse. Open Suse.

bdcapps@30 – I don’t know about the legal status but Ubuntu can install the proprietary driver from the web a couple of seconds after the install from the CD is over (same goes for MP3, MPEG, DIVX support etc.) so from a user perspective this is already solved. Yes, you can’t do that on a live CD, but then again, on Windows and mac there isn’t a live CD *AT ALL*.
Needless to mention, when you install Windows yourself you have to install a proprietary driver as well. People who complain the live CD doesn’t work 100% as well as a CD install should get a grip.

I’ve never been a Linux fan before, but the pic makes me want to get some hands-on experience immediately.

  5. wiglebot says:

Why do linux users have such strong opinions about what other linux users do? I think the conversation of “logging in as root” is the most discussed topic about Linux.

Mention “root” at a nerd party. The party will ignite!!!

  6. DCI Gene Hunt says:

Chris Heath you do know that OSX is not Linux, right?

Yes, which is why I said “the closest it will get”. If OSX was Linux, then the statement wouldn’t make sense. It’d be a bit like saying “the closest you’ll to get to going to your family reunion is going to your family runion”.

  7. Alex Wollangk says:

Linux is a great solution for the people it was written for and by. It’s an OS “of the people, by the people, for the people”. “The People” here being the people who are able to write an operating system, or at least some portion thereof. As the installation and update systems and GUIs become more refined Linux/Unix has become more approachable, but at heart it’s still a coder’s system. As such best practices become more important than user convenience.

Yes, many systems allow login as root. This is definitely NOT best practice. Best practice is to limit every session to the rights it needs to do what it should be doing. That way if it tries to do something it shouldn’t the impact will be reduced. If everyone starts logging in as root, developers will start coding as if everyone is logged in as root which will cause problems for the people who follow best practice.

  8. Angel H. Wong says:

Linux is pretty much like a mirror image of OSX. OSX has ease of use whereas Linux will easily use you.

OSX fanboys will yap that it’s not for everyone because it runs only on Macs even if they are nothing but Sexy PCs while Linux fanboys will ya that it runs on everything until an average human tries to use it.

BUT both claim that they will replace Windows but these claims are so old no one believes them anymore.

  9. Rick Cain says:

Mmmmmmm yeah, what were we talking about again?

  10. The Monster's Lawyer says:

Yes, let’s get back to the Linux breasteses.
    uuuummmm….

  11. filosofixit says:

I have thought your posts has been funny Marc P., but now I only see you as a noob. Bad story and B-A-D advice! Get a grip!

  12. LesPaul says:

I reproach the Linux community its pedantic mentallity. All the meaningless discussions about logging in as root or not or use su and sudo. What about responsibility for the user. Why protecting him, even when he doesn’t want to be protected. In this matter, Linux is at least as worse as Microsoft. What to do now? Apple?
