AT&T cell tower truck

Verizon and AT&T have both located temporary cell sites near presidential-candidate John McCain’s Arizona ranch, to better connect the good Senator, his supporters and security staff.

The news comes from the Washington Post, which established that Cindy McCain, the senator’s wife, offered some land on the ranch to Verizon early last year in the hope that it would put a cell there. Verizon got pretty far with that request, but ended up deciding the planning requirements were too onerous, and the return on investment too nebulous.

But come June the operator was wheeling in a temporary base station to provide coverage, apparently responding to a request from the security services.

In July AT&T noticed, and figured it’d better get in there too, so brought in its own temporary base station. So both networks now provide superb coverage to the McCain ranch…

None of this would matter if McCain wasn’t so closely involved with both Verizon, AT&T, and US regulator the FCC. Five of his campaign officials have worked as lobbyists for Verizon, and Verizon employees have stumped up $155K to help fund the campaign as well as $1.3m raised by the chief executive and company lobbyists. AT&T is even more McCain-centric, with the executive vice president raising $2.3m with the help of AT&T lobbyists, and staff chucking $325K of their own money into the pot.

McCain himself is member of the Senate commerce committee, which oversees the FCC.

But, then – since John McCain is a “maverick” I guess we can trust that he’s not influenced in the least by the butt-kissing treatment he’s getting from AT&T and Verizon. Eh?

  1. JimD says:

Yeah, Verizon must have checked the Polls and decided that it was unlikely that that site would become the “Western White House” and decided that a permanent installation would not be “Prudent” !!! I think Verizon or AT&T lays in T1 if not T3 lines to permanent Presidential Sites for high speed telecom. Since these Cells are on trucks, they can be driven away after the Election !!!

  2. RWW says:

This has already been debunked, by Verizon, AT&T, and the Secret Service.
The Secret Service specifically asked(ordered) Verizon and AT&T to put temporary towers there for security reasons while McCain is under protection. (Which they would do for Obama also if he lived in an area with little coverage)
The phone companies contracts with the government require them to act on any such request.

  3. Mr. Fusion says:

    Why ?

  4. Paddy-O says:

    #3 “Why”

Why what? What don’t understand about security and communication?

I’m sure for a small fee I could teach you about twisted pair vs. cell vs. FM, etc.

  5. keaneo says:

#2 – you poor ignorant trained RNC-monkey. They already had land lines, boo-boo. Mrs. Money just wanted the convenience of wireless.

What? You worried about an emergency call while McCain was out cutting brush with his mentor?

  6. Alex Wollangk says:

#5: That was rude. Yeah, Paddy-O was a bit of a prick in #4, but lets not stoop to that level. That and I’m pretty sure that he’s actually right on this one. I doubt “Mrs. Money” could care less about her cell coverage, but I guarantee the secret service DOES care. They use the wireless networks for more than just cell phone calls.

  7. JimD says:

I don’t know if the Telcos wanted to put in high speed land lines at all of McCain’s SEVEN HOUSES !!! Wouldn’t be “PRUDENT” !!!

  8. RWW says:

    #5:
First: You wasted your limited typing skills, and a couple of brain cells you obviously can’t afford with this reply. I’m an independent who has already sent in an absentee vote for Obama/Biden. (I am scheduled to be in the UK on Nov 4th)

Second: #6 is correct, the secret service DOES care about cellular coverage where their agents are actively protecting someone. Pulling in extra landlines is much more expensive than temporarily parking a truck with a cellular repeater.

Third: There are many valid problems with McCain. Making one up that could be disproved with a simple phone call to the respective phone companies is just bad journalism, and borderline, if not outright, fraud.

In Closing: This election is Obama’s (and his supporters) to lose. Rabid attacks do not help him any, and in fact can hurt him. If I was more sensitive, and had not already voted, messages like yours could push me away from voting for him. So, please post here your full name and city of residence. This way if, God forbid, Obama loses, on November 5th we can have every major newspaper headline read: {YOUR NAME} OF {YOUR CITY} HELPS MCCAIN DEFEAT OBAMA!

  9. Mr. Fusion says:

    #4, Cow-Paddy,

I’m sure for a large amount I could find the patience to teach you about modern technology.

The question is why when he is on the road for the next two weeks and will lose his protection once the election is finished.

Secondly is still a why; no one wants to take out a loser. It is too late to replace his name on any ballots and believe it or not, Palin is running for V-P, not President.

  10. Paddy-O says:

#9 “The question is why when he is on the road for the next two weeks and will lose his protection once the election is finished.”

Because the protection could extend to his family and he can return home any time he decides.

You couldn’t figure that out yourself?

  11. GigG says:

Silliness…. They did this in Little Rock prior to Clintons first election. Any given cell tower can only handle so many calls at a time. If the provider thinks there is going to be higher than normal call volume in a given area they are going to put in temp towers.

  12. deowll says:

I know land lines can be cut.

Sounds like some lower level flunkies are just doing their jobs.

  13. Mister Mustard says:

Did they have to erect the cell towers at all seven homes?

  14. Mr. Fusion says:

    #12, Brainiac,

I know land lines can be cut.

Follow the line coming out of a Cell Tower. They all end up connecting to a land line. Plus they are vulnerable to jamming. So your point is … ?
