Unanswered question: what is the limit on IQ they will accept? Does being able to recognize your boss is a crook or understanding that the order you were given was illegal mean yours is too high? Watch out! They’re gooning up for the police state crackdown!

Judge Rules That Police Can Bar High I.Q. Scores

A Federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by a man who was barred from the New London police force because he scored too high on an intelligence test.

In a ruling made public on Tuesday, Judge Peter C. Dorsey of the United States District Court in New Haven agreed that the plaintiff, Robert Jordan, was denied an opportunity to interview for a police job because of his high test scores. But he said that that did not mean Mr. Jordan was a victim of discrimination.

Judge Dorsey ruled that Mr. Jordan was not denied equal protection because the city of New London applied the same standard to everyone: anyone who scored too high was rejected.

A drone is not allowed to think for itself, otherwise you may actually have officers question some of the more ridiculous rules and policies of their force.

  2. SN says:

I just wanted to point out that the “applied the same standard to everyone” defense is complete BS. Would it work against Black people? “We’re not racist, we apply the same ‘no brown skin policy’ to everyone?” Or how about the “We’re not sexist, we apply the same ‘no vagina policy’ to everyone.”? Obviously, not.

Wow, this article is from 1999…I feel a Prince song breaking out.

    Calin –

That’s because the contributers to dvorak dot org just can’t stand a day going by without using that “police state” banner and bashing some police department for something.

    Does he get a retry?

I recall a similar case a while back and the ruling was based on a study that showed the higher IQ’s tended to get other jobs rather quickly, so high IQ became a valid job criteria due to expected cost of training and retention periods.

Still–you can’t discriminate against the retarded if they can do the job ((but they tend to have lower than average turn over rates!!)). Seems like it ought to apply to the upper curve as well?

Anyhow===howcome NYT shows a recent date and a 1999 date for this newsarticle. One thing the web does poorly from what I have seen when going to “Page Source” and other tabs is every page accessed “seems” to be published the second I clicked on it.

I know that can’t be right, but I can’t find “original date” on just about everything. That accurate information would “help.”

  7. gquaglia says:

I think they need an IQ test for politicians. I doubt many would pass muster.

  8. MikeN says:

So if they passed a no low IQ standard would you be OK with it, or would you go with the agitators and call it racist?

  9. Improbus says:

This doesn’t surprise me at all. It is good thing that most criminals have IQs even lower then the police.

  10. Improbus says:

D’oh! I meant ‘than’ rather than ‘then’.

  11. Mister Mustard says:

    >>So if they passed a no low IQ standard would you
    >>be OK with it, or would you go with the
    >>agitators and call it racist?

What are you implying, Lyin Mike? That beaners, jigaboos, and spics have low IQs?

It must be awful to be you.

  12. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#9 – So if they passed a no low IQ standard would you be OK with it, or would you go with the agitators and call it racist?

I would call it racist if I were illiterate and had no idea what the word racist actually meant.

  13. not yet says:

This isn’t really a problem for those who are smart — just do poorly on purpose.

  14. nomadwolf says:

    How’s this not discrimination?

If you changed “anyone who scored too high was rejected” to “anyone who was black was rejected,” would it still not be descrimination? If smart people aren’t a protected class then just say it.

  15. MikeN says:

#12, I don’t think you’re that dumb. I said that the agitators would say it was racist. I asked if you would go along with that or whether you would be OK with the IQ test.

Which brings up another point. I thought the Feds banned IQ tests? That’s why Microsoft does various puzzles instead.

The problem I see on the NET, as well as PRINT..
    is follow up.
Seeing something happen, but never hearing the out come, gets abit tedious..
Its as BAD as screwing up a FRONT PAGE story, and putting corrections in the Obit/comics/sports page.. Putting the correction ANYPLACE besides the FRONT page where the Original story was placed.

  17. civilrightsarent4whites says:

it was dumbed down so that blacks could pass the test. they never expected to be sued by white people who were smart.

they don’t want cops getting bored with their police work. that’s all there is to it.

there isn’t much of a correlation between honesty and “rocking the boat” and intelligence. that has more to do with temperament and being irrational in general.

i love the idiots who say this restriction is in place because a smart person would come in, see all the corruption and abuse, and stir up a commotion.

    bullshit.

a smart person would simply have a better handle on what was going on and play the game better.

they simply don’t want people getting bored with their work.

dumb people are easier to keep entertained, especially by the type of drama that cops deal with on a daily basis. that’s total soap opera shit. boring to a smart person. interesting for an idiot.

i prefer my cops to be idiots so they’ll be more likely to take their clown job seriously.

as for all the “police state” propaganda, most cops know that if they cross the line, people like me will push a pistol into their mouth and pull the trigger.

i think cops understand that they have a job because people with high iq’s (like me) let them. if they went too far or infringed on my quality of life too much.. i’d push back a lot harder than they could and they’d find themselves unemployed and dead shortly after. (i would be smart enough to know that once you get a cop fired, you need to kill them so they don’t get revenge, gang-style)

it’s never been a problem for me and as soon as it was i’d solve it so fast it’d be like there was never any issue at all.
