Reuters won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography on Monday for a picture of a Japanese videographer killed during a demonstration in Myanmar.
Adrees Latif won for “his dramatic photograph of the Japanese videographer, sprawled on the pavement, fatally wounded during a street demonstration in Myanmar,” the Pulitzer Prize board said.
Stark reminder for those brave journalists who practice their craft outside the “Green Zone” of News as Entertainment.
No Pulitzer for the dead guy?
Simply amazing….
As a kid, I really idolized these guys who stand in front of an advancing army with nothing but a camera… just so that we would know what is happening in some remote corner of the world.
Yeah, wtf? No Pulitzer for the dead guy? What, he took shitty pictures?

Yeah, reality sucks… smear some layers of lipstick and you’ve got the CNN version of the world.
One of the better films made regarding photo-journalists covering Nicaragua is “Under Fire.”

Yeah, Kenji Nagai deserves the reward.
So do Yon and Roggio.

It’s Bush’s fault.
It was the unnamed person who took the photo of the photojournalists that is the reason why there are crocodile tears flowing. A moniker of for sanity in humanity. Life is cheap and good living is expensive.
First… It’s an “AWARD”, not a “REWARD.” There really is a difference.
Second, while I have nothing but admiration for the brave photojournalist lying in the street… The award is for the photographer who took the photograph, not the subject of the photograph.
#10 – you are correct
I must say though that it was very inspiring to see someone staying true until the end, maybe they can break off a some kind recognition to Kenji.
#11 – I agree. He should be honored.
Anyone slain while honorably carrying out their duty should be honored.
He, and all heroes, regardless of what Achilles stupidly thought, could only be honored by living a long life into quiet contemplation of more harrowing times. I wonder if he had any “choices?”
Too bad the photographer was too busy getting the “shot” he might have helped save the guys life and become a “hero”.
Point. An award would not be a reward if given to a dead person.
Kenji deserves recognition, though.
#15 – Phillep – Kenji deserves recognition, though.
Absolutely.
I have a book put away with many other of my old photography stuff. It was pictures and documentary about journalists and photojournalists during the 1980s. Most. As I recall, were pictures taken during several civil wars in Africa and Lebanon. The end of the book was a listing and small eulogy of all the journalists and photojournalists killed while covering events.
We owe all of them a great debt for keeping our lives entertained every night for the 6:00 news.
